Common Hedgehog Cage Selection Mistakes

Prior to you making or buy your hedgehog cage, be sure you do not make following mistakes:

Having an aquarium. Many first-time hedgehog owners assume that glass aquariums make perfectly safe cages for hedgehogs. This is simply not the case. Aquariums lack proper ventilation under normal conditions and therefore are notorious for collecting excess moisture and odor. Aquariums will even become literal ovens each time a atomizer is added placing abdominal muscles time of your hedgehog in danger. There are numerous other cage styles which are just as cheap as and in many cases easier to maintain than aquariums, so do not risk the healthiness of your hedgehog just to save money and time!

Wire cage floors. In order to be safe, a hedgehog cage should never have a very wire floor. Unlike larger animals such as rabbits, hedgehogs have tiny feet and legs, that makes it quite simple for your hedgie to fall partially through while moving. While falling through sounds harmless, this will actually lead to serious injuries like broken limbs.

Another excuse in order to avoid wire floors in hedgehog cages is they can be too rough on sensitive feet. Many individuals don’t understand that foot troubles are incredibly common among hedgehogs. Hedgehogs have delicate feet and toes which are easily injured and sometimes become infected. Instead, avoid these health conditions altogether by selecting a better living environment for your hedgehog.

Using wood. Wood is not a perfect material for a hedgehog cage in that it could absorb urine and be quite stinky. Contain ramps or shelves that a hedgehog can go away of.

The one safe ramps and ledges are ones using a solid railing which a hedgehog cannot fall through. Lots of people believe that because animals like hedgehogs are really small that they can’t be easily hurt inside a fall. It’s not true. Serious injuries may appear even in falls from short distances.

Doesn’t have an animal proof top if you have other pets. Don’t think that other pets won’t get access to off limit areas! If you have a cat or dog that could access your hedgehog cage, be sure you have an animal proof top in place! Wire screens with wooden frames that can be secured work well. If by using a sterilte tub as being a cage, you may also work with a matching lid if you cut a lot of air holes.
